1987-1991 Dodge Dakota Truck 3.9L V6 Engine Shorty Header Installation Instructions

January 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

These components are designed to improve the exhaust efficiency of the Dodge 3.9 Litre V6 engine with E.F.I. (Electronic Fuel Injection). These tubular manifolds are a direct replacement for the factory exhaust manifolds. A performance gain can be expected by the installation of this system. This system does not require welding for installation and retains all O.E.M. emissions equipment.

This Edelbrock part has received an Executive Order (E.O. #) from the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.) making it legal for street use on pollution-controlled motor vehicles in all 50 states. To assist you with emissions equipment certification, we have included a silver fan shroud decal to help testing personnel verify that this part is a legal replacement part on the vehicle for which it is cataloged. The adhesive-backed decal should be affixed to your fan shroud next to the existing emission and engine specification decal. Do not cover your original equipment specification decal with the Edelbrock fan shroud decal.

• DISASSEMBLY
1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
2. Use penetrating oil on all nuts and bolts to be removed. This will prevent the possibility of broken or stripped nuts and bolts.
3. Remove O2 sensor (1987 only) being careful not to rupture or destroy the unit. WARNING: Do not clean this unit in any solvent and do not damage wire.
4. Unbolt air injection tubes from both manifolds.
5. Unbolt exhaust pipes from both exhaust manifolds.
6. Unbolt and remove both exhaust manifolds.
7. Install 5/16″x 1-1/8″ studs (supplied) in second hole on left side and third hole on right side (where OEM bolts were located on exhaust manifolds).
8. Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces before assembly.

• ASSEMBLY - LEFT SIDE
1. Place manifold port gasket over studs (be sure surface is clean).
2. Install TES manifold over studs, install OEM cup washers, nuts and additional nut provided in kit, then tighten evenly.
3. Bolt air injection tube to manifold using OEM gasket (do not tighten at this time).
4. Bolt exhaust pipe to TES manifold using 3/8″ x 2″ bolts, nuts, and lock washers provided in kit (do not tighten at this time).
5. Install O2 sensor using anti-seize on threads and torque to 30 ft./lbs.
• ASSEMBLY - RIGHT SIDE
1. Place heat stove plate on top of TES manifold, insert 1-3/4″ long round head screw through plate and down between front primary tubes adjacent to port flange. Place 3/16″ flat washer and lock washer over screw, then start nut (do not tighten at this time).
2. Place band clamp over rear primary tube at the front and attach to heat stove using 3/16″ bolt, lock washer, and nut provided in kit. Secure heat stove plate at this time.
3. Rubber mud guard attached to fender well must be trimmed to clear TES manifold tubes.
4. Remove the manifold and trim the necessary material from the mud guard.
5. Place manifold port gasket over studs (be sure surface is clean).
6. Install TES manifold over studs; install OEM cup washers, nuts, and additional nut provided in kit, then tighten evenly.
7. Bolt air injection tube to manifold using OEM gasket and tighten both sides at this time.
8. Bolt exhaust pipe to manifold using 3/8″ x 2″ bolts, nuts, and lock washers provided in kit.
9. Tighten both right and left side exhaust pipe connections.
10. Connect negative cable to battery.
11. Be sure that all brake and fuel lines have adequate clearance.
12 Start engine and bring up to normal running temperature, then turn off and let cool.
13. When cool, re-tighten all manifold nuts and bolts.
