Add a delayed turn-off feature, normally found on cars costing $$$ more, to your interior cabin light. The Lights Up! light delay module will work with most switched-ground oper- ated interior lights, including multiple lights with a combinedwattage less than 15W. The Lights Up! module is equipped with two different delay options: 25 seconds and 15 seconds. A small jumper can be moved to adjust the delay. It comes set to the 15 second delay.
Step 1) Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
Step 2) Remove the lens covering the bulb on your interior light. If you are unsure how to do this, the correct procedure can be found in your owner’s manual – usually under “Interior Lamp Replacement.” Remove the bulb from the light, and then remove the screws holding the light assembly to the car. Gently pull the assembly away from the car; you do not need to disconnect the wires.
Step 3) If your light is not attached to a metallic part of your car, you will have three wires leading to the assembly. Otherwise, your light will have two wires connected to it. One of these wires supplies +12V to the light at all times, the other wire is connected to the door switches and connects to ground when the door is opened. For cars without a metallic mounting, the third wire connects to ground without going through the door switches. If you have a metallic mounting, this third wire is usually incorporated directly into the light fixture and will be evident as a metal tab underneath one of the mounting screws. You need to identify each wire on your light. With your VOM set to measure resistance, touch each wire in turn with one of the probes while the other is connected to a good ground. The +12V lead will show infinite resistance (an open circuit) regardless of whether the doors are opened or closed. The switched ground wire will show zero (0) or a very small amount of resistance when the car door is opened and infinite resistance when the door is closed. If you have a three-wire light assembly, the constant ground wire will show zero resistance regardless of the doors being opened or closed. For those wishing to control multiple lights with a single Lights Up! module, the combined wattage of all bulbs must not exceed 15W. In addition, you must insert the Lights Up! module into the light circuit before the switched ground wire splits off to go to the separate fixtures. Othe rwise, the Lights Up! module will only control the lights connected downstream from it, and the other lights will continue to operate in a normal fashion. If a suitable location before the split cannot be found, multiple Lights Up! modules can be used in the same vehicle to control individual lights.
Step 4) Now that you have the wires identified, use the red wire tap to attach the red wire coming from the Lights Up! module to the +12V wire leading to the light. You do not need to remove the insulation from either wire. Just slip the +12V wire going to the light into the slot and into the first hole in the connector. Slip the end of the red wire from the light module into the other hole. Make sure the red wire goes past half way. Using a pair of pliers, squeeze the metal tab down into the red plastic connector. Now flip the cover down and press until it latches.
Step 5) Cut the switched ground wire about 1” from the lamp assembly. Strip ž” of insulation from each end of the cut wire. Crimp the white wire from the Lights Up! module to the short cut wire coming from the lamp assembly. Connect the black wire from the Lights Up! module to the cut wire leading back into the car in the same manner.
Step 6) If your car’s lamp is the three wire type, cut the ground lug from the green wire and use the remaining red connector to attach the green wire to the constant ground wire going to your lamp assembly.
Step 7) Find a suitable place to locate the Lights Up! module inside the cavity from where you removed the light. Usually it can be slipped between the headliner and the outer metal roof along one of the edges of the lamp opening. Make sure when the screws that hold the lamp are reinstalled, the module will not be in the way.
Step
Reinstall the lamp module. If your light was the two-wire type, make sure the green ground lug is unde rneath one of the screws and positioned between the lamp assembly and the sheet metal. Replace the bulb and reattach the lens.
Step 9) Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
