How many miles to replace struts for 1998 BMW 328i?

February 5th, 2011 · No Comments

- I have owned many BMW’s. The struts should last at least 150K miles. I have never had to replace them on any BMW which had less mileage than that. I currently have a BMW which has 200K miles on it and the struts have never been changed and they are still fine.

- German sturts are the strongest on planet. Replace them only if they don’t dop their job anymore. Some last for 150,000 miles. If you bounce your front end, and the bounce continues for more than one cycle (down, up, stop) then it is worn. German cars use either Bilstein (rare) or Sachs struts (most common) If you are paying more than $60 each, you should shop elsewhere.
- Motorist Assurance Program (MAP) guidelines recommend replacing OEM struts after 50,000 miles. Their testing has shown that strut performance drops off measurably by that time, reducing braking and handling performance of the vehicle.
